As there are huge differences between the Chinese and the UK culture besides difference in the economic lives of the people living in both the countries enjoy different economic life standards (Cateora & Graham, 2005). In addition the legal framework to which the HR manager of the organization adheres to will be different between the two countries (Adler, 2002). All this will required the adaptation of the people management strategy and the organization could not implement the standardized people management strategy that it has been using in it's headquarter or other subsidiaries in other parts of the world (Ely, 1994). An example of differences between the HR practice could be understand from the fact that in UK there are tight rules and procedures regarding equal employment opportunities and all the organization operating within the country will adheres to such policies, however in the home country of the organization there are no such tight rules and procedures and one may experience glass ceiling in China where women are kept limited to the middle level management (Hofstede, 1980). In addition, the employment laws between the two countries are also different, for example in UK one may find minimum wage rate which is almost absent in case of China. Moreover, as China has the world's largest population, abundant labor is available in the country, however this is not the case with UK where due to demographic changes, ageing of the population, and decrease in the population growth rate is resulting in increase difficulty to find skilled labor (Rhinesmith, 2008).
In addition the cultural differences of the two countries are very different from each other. For example if one compares the two countries on the basis of Hofstede national culture model, one may find that China high collectivism, high power distance, long-term orientation, high uncertainty avoidance and feminine values (Hofstede, 1980). On the other hand, on the basis of the national culture model presented by Hofstede, UK may be regarded as a place where there exist high degree of individualism, low power distance, short-term orientation, low uncertainty avoidance, and masculine values (Hofsteds, 2001). Essentially the national culture of these countries are almost completely opposite of each other and perhaps this is the reason that UK is regarded as West, and China is regarded as East (Tayeb, 2003).
