Musical historians generally consider the Baroque Era as the period between the birth of the opera (approximately 1600) and the deaths of two of history's most renowned musicians, Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frederick Handel. The history of the term 'Baroque' itself is often a matter of dispute. According to some, the term is borrowed from art history, but was initially used in a pejorative manner, as a 'corrupt dialect of Renaissance' (Dorak, 2006: par. 1). Other historians have described the word 'Baroque' by its various linguistic interpretations. According to Benton and DiYanni, the word comes from the Portuguese word barrocco, which refers to a large pearl of irregular dimensions (2005: 358). Benton and DiYanni also agree that the term initially had a negative connotation, but that this gradually shifted as time went on and the music and art of the period gained respect.Other musical historians prefer to describe the term 'Baroque' strictly in terms of musical definition. As Bukofzer asserts, although many of the characteristics of Baroque music can be described in terms that apply to the art and literature of the period, the style of Baroque music stands alone—although he himself seemed hesitant to define it. The terminology, according to Bukofzer, 'has been criticized because baroque qualities cannot be found in the musical notes'—suggesting that there is some magical essence that defines the genre. If there is, he continues: 'whoever hopes to discover baroque qualities in music as though they were a mysterious chemical substance misunderstands the meaning of the term which essentially denotes the inner stylistic unity of the period'
