Creator works by intellectual powers like those of man.’ Darwin argues that developments and improvements take place in living organisms through the processes of natural selection and evolution, because, ‘In living bodies, variation will cause the slight alterations, generation will multiply them almost infinitely, and natural selection will pick out with unerring skill each improvement.’ Darwin admits that if any complicated organ can be found to exist that could not have been formed through numerous, successive or slight modification, then his theory would become invalidated. He confidently argues however that whilst there is no doubt that we do not know all the transitional changes in the development of all organisms, particularly in isolated species, he cannot find any organ which cannot be explained through the process of natural selection. Darwin’s argument therefore provides us with an explanation of complex organisms which does not rely on any notion of God or intelligent design. As Richards (2000:21) argues, Darwin’s argument radically challenges the necessity of an existing God to explain the complex nature of reality, although it does not rule out the necessity of ‘Mind’ to get reality moving in the first place.
